Is ChatGPT down, or is it just you?
1. Check the official status above
Yellow or red means a real ChatGPT down event or partial outage on OpenAI’s side. There is nothing to fix on your side; wait for the fix. Incident titles are quoted from OpenAI.
2. Status is green? Change your setup
Open ChatGPT on mobile data, another device or another browser. If that works, the problem is your original network or browser.
3. Compare the website and the app
If only one of them fails, its cache or sign-in session is broken. Fix that side with the steps below.
Common ChatGPT error messages when it is not working

- Something went wrong.
- A general error. It can be a temporary server issue on OpenAI’s side or a problem with your local setup.
- There was an error generating a response.
- The answer failed to generate. Very common during an outage; refresh or regenerate once.
- A network error occurred.
- Your device cannot keep a reliable connection to ChatGPT.
- An error occurred while connecting to the websocket.
- Same family as the network error, often caused by the network or a security extension.
- There was a problem preparing your chat.
- A browser extension or URL blocker is usually interfering with the page.
- Blank screen, frozen page, or endless loading
- Common during outages, and also on poor connections.
- ChatGPT is slow, lagging, freezing, or unresponsive
- Usually peak-time load or degraded performance on OpenAI’s side.
Not a ChatGPT down event but still not working? Try these steps
- Refresh the page or start a new chat.
- Clear the cache and cookies for chatgpt.com.
- Open ChatGPT in an incognito or private window.
- Disable browser extensions, especially privacy, security and ad-blocking ones.
- Turn off proxy tools and secure DNS tools such as Web Protect.
- Switch networks, for example from Wi-Fi to mobile data.
